Pelasto-Elastic Hot Applied Bitumen Mastic

High-Performance Hot Applied Joint & Crack Sealant

Plasto-Elastic Polymeric Hot Applied Bitumen Mastic is a single-component, hot-applied, polymer-modified bituminous mastic designed for sealing horizontal expansion joints, cracks, and construction joints in concrete and asphalt pavements.

This material, commercially known as HIBERNIASEAL, is supplied in solid form and applied in molten condition using professional melter-applicator equipment. Its plasto-elastic behavior allows it to combine high flow at application temperature with excellent elasticity and durability after cooling.

Material Characteristics and Performance

HIBERNIA SEAL is formulated using polymer-modified bitumen, providing:

  • High elasticity and deformation recovery

  • Strong adhesion to concrete and asphalt substrates

  • Excellent resistance to water penetration

  • Long-term performance under thermal movement and traffic loads

At application temperature, the mastic is sufficiently fluid to penetrate fine cracks, while after cooling it forms a tough, flexible seal that accommodates joint movement without cracking or debonding.

Uses of Plasto-Elastic Hot Applied Bitumen Mastic

This product is widely used for sealing and repairing joints and cracks in high-stress infrastructure, including:

  • Bridge expansion joints

  • Airport pavements: runways, taxiways, and aprons

  • Concrete highways and roads

  • Multi-storey parking structures

  • Concrete pavements and slabs

  • Expansion joints in bridges and civil engineering structures

Advantages of Hot Applied Polymeric Bitumen Mastic

Key benefits include:

  • High polymer content ensuring excellent elasticity

  • Deep penetration into cracks at application temperature

  • Effective protection against water ingress

  • Resistance to repeated thermal expansion and contraction

  • Durable performance under heavy traffic and load conditions

The balanced viscosity at application temperature allows complete filling of cracks while preventing excessive flow or drainage.

Application Guidelines

Crack Configuration

  • Minimum crack depth: 10 mm

  • Width-to-depth ratio: 1 : 1.5

Surface Preparation

  • Substrates must be clean, dry, and free of dust, oil, and loose particles

  • All weak or deteriorated material must be removed prior to application

Heating

  • Heat the mastic to 170 ± 5 °C

  • Use a controlled oil bath or oil-jacketed melting vessel with agitator

  • Maintain heating until a smooth, homogeneous, pourable consistency is achieved

Application

  • Apply using melter-pourer equipment

  • For detailed or localized work, use a metal-lipped bucket

  • Application can be performed at ambient temperatures of 4 °C and above

Cleaning

  • Clean tools and equipment immediately after use with kerosene or suitable solvents

Safety Instructions

  • Wear protective gloves and safety goggles during application

  • Avoid contact with hot material

  • In case of eye contact, rinse immediately with plenty of clean water and seek medical attention if necessary
